This hand-colored engraving by Paul Girardet is based on the original 'Washington Crossing the Delaware' painted by Emanuel Leutze in 1851–seventy-five years after the actual event. In 1776, Washington and his troops crossed the Delaware River during a winter storm in late December in order to launch a surprise attack on a British-held city and Hessian garrison in Trenton, New Jersey. The Battle of Trenton was a victory for George Washington and is viewed as an early turning point in the war.
