A Minute Man was an ordinary colonial citizen who, at the beginning of the American Revolution, was ready to fight at a moment’s notice. Known for their quick response and bravery, Minute Men became heroes of the early battles of the American Revolutionary War and the ultimate symbol of selflessness and service to the cause. The citizen soldier depicted in this early 20th century statue by artist Daniel Chester French epitomized the idea of selfless civic service. A life size version of French’s sculpture stands today at Minute Man National Historical Park in Concord, MA. The Minute Man continues to be a symbol of the United States National Guard who uses the slogan, “Always ready, always there.” In addition to The Concord Minute Man of 1775, French is famous for his statue of President Abraham Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall.
