The Marquis de Lafayette was one of the last surviving French generals who served in the American Revolutionary War. In 1824, President James Monroe invited him to tour the United States. Lafayette’s 13-month visit brought him to 24 states and was celebrated across the young nation. This circular, blue-gray plate depicts Lafeytte’s arrival in New York. In addition to a flotilla of ships, troops can be seen firing cannons and soldiers on horseback greet the famous general. The event is commemorated with the words:
“LANDING OF GEN. LA FAYETTE
At Castle Garden New York
16 August 1824”
The plate’s border is decorated with leaves and sprigs of primroses and daisies.
