Our Recycling Center has evolved to meet changing business needs

We are committed to preserving the environment so that future generations may learn from our history.

Colonial Williamsburg's recycling program began in 1991 when more than 221,000 pounds of cardboard, glass, paper and aluminum cans were collected. Over the years we’ve added plastics, newspaper, rags, wood pallets, food waste, phone books, magazines, liquid chemicals, tires, scrap metal, oyster shells, paint thinner, arboreal (tree) debris and horse manure. Mike Hornby, manager of food and beverage operations, reported a 14 percent increase in 2010 over 2009 — that’s 952 tons of materials recycled in 2010. “Our true savings come in the form of reduced pickups from BFI and reduced land fill fees which came to over $111,000 last year,” Mike said. Mike oversees the Recycling Center located adjacent to the Franklin Street Office building and coordinates the collection and disposal of various other materials used throughout the foundation. He works with vendors on disposal, pricing, and other logistics to assure we maximize both environmental aspects and savings. Mark Wenger, director of facilities maintenance, chairs the cross-division recycling committee that works to continually remind staff members of things everyone can do to reduce, reuse, and recycle. From humble but committed beginnings, Colonial Williamsburg’s recycling program has evolved to meet the changing business needs and growing interest in environmental stewardship.
