Suggestions for Self-guided Tours
To take best advantage of
your time in Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area, plan ahead. When
making your plans, keep in mind the following tips.
Prepare group members so they are aware
of what was happening in the 18th century in Virginia. The 1700s
was the scene of our journey from being loyal British subjects to becoming
free and independent American citizens. In Williamsburg, prominent nation
builders, such as George Washington, Patrick Henry, and Thomas Jefferson,
heard the same church bell ring out the hour as did the everyday nation
builders: tradespeople, women, children, and enslaved and free individuals.
(On your visit, you will be able to hear that same church bell!)
Find out what other resources are available. Check
out the rest of our website for activities, lesson plans, virtual tours, and
accessibility information.
Pick up a copy
of “Colonial Williamsburg This Week” when you get to town. This
brochure outlines what sites are open and their hours of operation, provides
a full schedule of events for the week, and includes a current map of the
Historic Area.
Travel in small groups
with a chaperone. Most
trade sites and houses limit the number of people permitted inside at one time.
If you keep your groups to 20 or fewer, you will be able to move through the
town more efficiently and see more sites.
Ask
questions of the costumed staff outside of each site. They can tell
you how many people may enter at a time, how long a wait you’ll have, and
how long the interpretation inside may take. They can also answer other
questions you may have.
